Summer Lighting All Year Round

It’s no secret that light alone has the special ability to change the way a space feels. It can make a room appear larger, lift our mood and influence how connected we feel to the world outside. What can you do in spaces where natural daylight is limited? In this month’s curation, we looked at the advanced lighting technology that can make the smallest and darkest rooms feel open and connected to the outdoors. This is relevant in Singapore, where many apartments include compact internal spaces like bunker rooms, with little or no access to natural light. Now commonly used for storage or as additional sleeping spaces, these rooms can easily feel enclosed. The right lighting design, however, can completely shift that experience.

Today, we have sophisticated daylight-mimicking light fixtures available that can recreate many of the qualities we associate with natural daylight. Rather than simply producing a bright white light, these systems can replicate different colour temperatures throughout the day, from the softer, warmer tones of morning to brighter daylight and the golden hues of late afternoon. Some technology can even support the subtle change over time, creating a more natural rhythm within an interior. The fixtures also come beyond conventional ceiling lights, such as illuminated panels, concealed linear lighting, recessed fixtures or sculptural lamps that distribute light gently across walls and ceilings.

A well-positioned source of light would be able to create the illusion of windows, increase the perceived height of a room and soften the boundaries of a compact space. For a bunker room, this type of lighting scheme could transform the space beyond a storage space and into a calming reading room, home office, meditation space, or bedroom.

Creating a connection to the outdoors in a room without a window can instantly transform how the space feels, making it brighter, more inviting and alive. With the right lighting, even the most enclosed corners of a home can take on a sense of openness and possibility. Explore this month’s curation on artificial lighting to discover the clever technologies, fixtures and design ideas that can bring a little more daylight, and a little more summer, into your home, all year round.
